Digital vs Offset Printing: Which One for Your Run Size

Body copy

Digital and offset are the two main printing methods, and choosing the wrong one can cost you money or compromise quality. The right choice depends on your run size, budget and quality requirements.

Digital printing

Digital printing transfers the design directly from a computer to the printing surface. There are no plates, no setup and no minimum run.

How it works: The file goes straight to the press. Each print is identical (or variable, if you are doing personalised printing).

Best for: - Short runs (10–500 units) - Fast turnaround (same day to 48 hours) - Variable data (names, numbers, QR codes) - Prototypes and proofs

Advantages: - No setup cost — cheaper for short runs - Fast turnaround - Variable data printing - Easy to make changes between prints

Disadvantages: - Higher per-unit cost for long runs - Limited paper and finish options - Colour consistency can vary between runs

Offset printing

Offset printing uses plates to transfer the design to a rubber blanket, which then transfers it to the paper. It requires setup but produces the highest quality for long runs.

How it works: The design is etched onto plates, which are mounted on the press. Ink is applied to the plates, transferred to a rubber blanket, then to the paper.

Best for: - Long runs (500+ units) - Highest quality requirements - Speciality papers and finishes - Pantone colour matching

Advantages: - Lower per-unit cost for long runs - Superior colour accuracy - Wider range of papers and finishes - Pantone colour matching

Disadvantages: - Setup cost makes short runs expensive - Longer turnaround (3–7 working days) - Not economical for small quantities

Which one should you choose?

Run size Recommended method Why
1–50 Digital No setup cost, fast turnaround
50–500 Digital Cost-effective, good quality
500–2,000 Either Compare quotes from both methods
2,000+ Offset Lower per-unit cost, superior quality

Frequently asked questions

Is offset printing better quality than digital? For long runs, yes. Offset produces sharper images and more accurate colour. For short runs, modern digital presses produce excellent quality that is indistinguishable from offset.

How much does offset printing cost in Kenya? Offset printing has a setup cost of KES 2,000 – 5,000 plus a per-unit cost that drops with volume. It becomes cheaper than digital at around 500–1,000 units.

Can I get same-day offset printing? No. Offset requires plate-making and press setup, which takes at least a day. Digital is the option for same-day printing.

Which method is better for business cards? Digital for runs under 500. Offset for runs over 500, especially if you want speciality papers or finishes.

Can offset printing match Pantone colours? Yes. Offset printing can match Pantone colours exactly, which is essential for brand consistency. Digital printing approximates Pantone colours but cannot match them exactly.
